In 2010 AIPMT was a two-tier test AIPMT prelims and AIPMT mains. In 2013 pattern was changed again two-tier examination was replaced by National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. Now In 2016 the exam will be conducted in a single stage that usually occurs on the first Sunday of May.

There has been a decrement in the no. of candidates appearing for the examination. In 2014 around 523,701 candidates appeared for the exam which has reduced to 374,386 in the year 2015. One reason for this gradual decrement may be its bilingualness i.e. the paper is conducted in two languages only Hindi and English making it harder for candidates from regions like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana etc.
