The Uttarakhand Open University (UOU) was established by an Act of Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in 2005 (Act No. 23 of 2005) with the aim of providing education to all areas of state through the mode of distance learning. The university uses the most flexible and innovative methods of education so that the learners can easily do the studies independently without requiring the help from anyone. It is a state distance learning university which has been established to promote education in rural and far flung areas. The university provides Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates as per the programme chosen by the learner.The major objective of the UOU is to provide skill based knowledge and education to the learners so that they can easily get the jobs which results in boosting the development of the State.
The Uttarakhand Open University offers various distance education programmes to students from all over the state. The university offers need-based academic programmes to the learners which is very much helpful in getting the job opportunity. The university offers courses such as Bachelor’s Preparatory, Post Graduate, Graduate, Diploma, Post Graduate Diploma, Certificate and Preparatory Programmes. The subjects which has been included in these courses are conventional as well as innovative and they have been also given professional and vocational orientation by university.
The UOU has established various Schools of Studies which are responsible to design, develop, plan, supervise and organise its academic programmes and courses in coordination with the School staff and different academic, administrative and service wings of the University. The main focus of UOU is to provide the wide choice of courses to the learners at different levels. At present, the University has been running various courses through its 13 Schools of Studies which includes 47 departments. These Schools are as follows:

The Uttarakhand Open University offers admission to most of its distance courses in two academic sessions i.e. in Summer Session and Winter Session. There are few disciplines for which admission is provided in only any of the one session. To take admission to the various courses mentioned above, the university provides the latest Uttarakhand Open University Prospectus which includes the required information about all the programmes such as admission eligibility, age limit, duration, fee, etc. The learners can obtain the prospectus from the nearest UOU Regional Centre or they can simply download the soft copy of prospectus from university official website at following path: http://www.uou.ac.in/system/files/Prospectus-2015-16.pdf
There are few UOU courses for which the university follows the semester system approach of study whereas some courses follows the yearly system. The students can apply for admission to these courses online at UOU online admission portal. The university publish the advertisement for admission to its various programmes on its website and local daily newspapers. All the important information such as commencement of admission, last date of admission, etc. is provided in the advertisement itself.
